How to Set Up a Holding Page (Lock Screen) on Squarespace 7.1
If you’re building a new website or updating your current site on Squarespace 7.1 but aren’t quite ready to launch, you’ll want a simple way to let visitors know what’s happening.
A holding page (also known as a coming soon page or lock screen) is the perfect solution. It keeps your site looking professional while you work behind the scenes — and means you don’t lose potential clients who land on your URL before you’re live.
Here’s how to set up a holding page in just a few clicks using the Squarespace Lock Screen:
Step 1: Go to Site Availability
Log into your Squarespace dashboard.
From the left-hand menu, click Settings → Site Availability.
Step 2: Choose “Password Protected”
Under Site Availability, select Password Protected.
This automatically activates your Squarespace Lock Screen, so anyone who visits your site will see your holding page until you’re ready to go live.
Step 3: Customise Your Lock Screen
Now the fun bit — making your holding page feel on-brand. Head to Pages → System Pages → Lock Screen and update it with:
Branding & Text - Add your logo or business name and a short headline (e.g. “New website coming soon”).
Media - add a background image or video
Style - adjust the fonts, colours and sizes
Tip: Add some ways for people to reach you while your website is offline such as an email address, or social links.
(Keep it short, clear, and true to your brand. Think of this page as a teaser, not the full story.)
Step 4: Share the Password (If Needed)
Back in Settings → Site Availability, you can create a password.
Share this only with people who need behind-the-scenes access (like your designer, VA, or photographer).
And that’s it!
You now have a professional Squarespace holding page live, ready to capture interest while you build the rest of your site.
